Other workers install these braces, which strengthen the rim and support the parts of the piano that will go into the case. A worker called the bellyman notches the top of the bridge with a chisel, leaving only a small portion of the top edge higher than the rest. The strings will be streched across this narrow area, which is covered with black graphite to reduce friction between the strings and the bridge.

The soundboard is temporarily placed in the piano case after the bridge has been glued to it, so that the fit can be very carefully checked. If the soundboard passes inspection, it is finally installed in the case. The cast iron plate is sprayed with bronze lacquer.
